Fall Festival celebrates Mattapoisett's agricultural past
Kids had some old-fashioned fun on Saturday afternoon as the Mattapoisett Historical Society held its annual Fall Festival.
With corn husk dolls to make, apple cider to press, and pumpkins to carve, there was something for kids of all ages.
"We were talking about how to bring in more of the history of agriculture," said Curator Elizabeth Hutchinson.
Children used their muscle to press hundreds of apples, donated by Peter's Farm in Acushnet and Stop and Shop, on the old fashioned cider press.
"You can have a turn, literally," said Tom Copps, a member of the historical society.
After pressing, kids got to drink the fruits of their labor.
Hutchinson even cooked up some sweets from the past that were eaten during harvest time, including vinegar pie, a sweet custard dessert with vinegar to mimic the taste of lemons.
"Every year we think about expanding and bringing the agricultural past into [the festival]," said Hutchinson.
