Families drive in for ‘The Parent Trap’ at OR

Aug 29, 2020

MATTAPOISETT — Summer is almost over, but the “student ambassadORs” of Old Rochester Regional High School brought community members together for a showing of “The Parent Trap” (1998) under the stars on Aug. 28. for one last hurrah before the start of the school year.

Senior ambassadOR Claire Barry came up with the idea for the event after going to a drive-in movie at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford.

“I thought we needed that at our school too,” Barry said.

As the sunset faded into twilight, students in red shirts directed cars onto the softball field out in front of the school.

The cars were kept six feet apart and families stayed in their own vehicles during the viewing.

During the film, AmbassadORs walked around with popcorn and water, and trash cans at the end for any waste.

“A lot of people are struggling right now” with not being able to see one another, senior ambassadOR Steven Carvalho said, so it was good to have an event like a drive-in movie.

The group of students planned the event over several Zoom meetings over the course of a month and ultimately chose “The Parent Trap” for Aug. 28 and “Inside Out” for Sept. 5 (previously planned for Aug. 29).

Families and friends drove out in vans, trucks, jeeps and hatchbacks to watch the event.

Sophia and Leea Pomerlau, along with Molly and Brendan Spenard sat together in the back of a minivan as their parents sat in a truck parked behind them.

“It gives us something to do, keeps us productive, and keeps us six feet apart,” Sophia said.

“They look forward to it” because it might give them a chance to see people they missed, said Carol Spenard.

“Inside Out” will be shown on the front field of OR on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 per car.
