Fanfare, fiesta to start Tri-County Symphonic Band's 51st season
The Tri-County Symphonic Band is bringing the sounds of the Pacific to Marion for the first concert of its 51st season.
Conductor and Music Director Philip Sanborn said he chose the Pacific Ocean as the theme for the concert after looking at some of his favorite music pieces.
“They were all on the Pacific Rim, so I decided to craft a program around the theme,” said Sanborn.
In addition to the opus “Fiesta del Pacifico,” the band will play a Korean folk song and selections from the musical “South Pacific.”
But first they’ll start out with a completely different type of music, an energizing number written by Rochester resident John Wallace.
“We wanted to kick off our second 50 years, so we commissioned a piece,” said Sanborn.
Wallace said the piece is short at around three and a half minutes.
“I just knew to make sure that it had a stirring piece,” said Wallace, who said the fanfare has plenty of brass and percussion.
The concert is Sunday, October 21, at 3 p.m. at the Fireman Performing Arts Center at Tabor Academy.
There will be refreshments after the concert. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children age 12 and under are admitted free.
Tickets may be purchased at The Bookstall in Marion, The Symphony Music Shop in Dartmouth, at the door or at www.TriCountySymphonicBand.org.
