Farmers market reopens for the season

Jun 4, 2014

The Mattapoisett Farmers Market returned to Old Rochester Regional Junior High on Tuesday afternoon with a number of fresh faces.

Seekonk resident Darlene Sicard of D’s Lectables brought her baked goods to the market for the first time.

Sicard started baking copious amounts of cookies and cakes to give to her husband’s uncles for Christmas gifts. People began asking her why she didn’t go into business, so she did.

Sicard’s stand includes coffee cake made with her great grandmother’s recipe. She can also bake up 30 varieties of cookies, including one that weighs more than a pound. Sicard has several granolas as well and all said all her food is made with natural ingredients.

Sicard said she was glad to come to the  Mattapoisett market.

“I try to keep it real. I try to keep it small,” she said. “This is a great thing.”

In addition to Sicard, Del’s Lemonade has a stand this year as does Rein Ciarfella of Rein’s Real Bread. Ciarfella has been making Swedish rye bread and ciabatta for four years.

Moe’s Private Reserve spice company is also new to the market with multipurpose seasoning and rubs as well as beef jerky.

Market Manager Jenn Szabo said the market starts off small each year but there will be 20 to 25 vendors by mid season.

Returning vendors Skinny Dip Farm and Cervelli’s Farm both have lettuce and other greens available as well as starter plants for the garden. Other vendors have jams, cheeses, soups and baked goods.

The market runs every Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. through the middle of Oct.
