"Fight like a girl" game supports cancer research

If there’s one thing the varsity field hockey team at Old Rochester Regional High knows how to do, it’s how to fight like a girl.

The team usually has the singular focus of beating the opposition. But on Wednesday, the girls were also looking to do their part to support cancer research.

Decked out in pink knee-highs socks, pink headbands and jerseys that read “Fight like a girl”, the team hit the field against Bourne.

On the sidelines, freshman field hockey coach Rhonda Reints, her team and parents sold baked goods, headbands and other pink items, the proceeds of which will support cancer research.

Reints said the game originally started to honor two girls on the team whose parents passed away from cancer.

“Now we’ve broadened it out to ‘Fight like a girl,’” said Reints.

“It really means a lot to us,” said teammate Abby Bentz of the annual game. “It’s always nice to donate to a good cause.”

The team also celebrated a win two goals by Brenna Maloney, one by Katie Wilbur and one by Ali Saccone for a final score of 4-1.
