Fire chief doesn't suspect foul play in waste management fire
A trash fire at ZERO Waste Solutions brought out nine fire departments and temporarily closed down I-495 on Friday evening.
The four alarm fire broke out around 6:15 p.m. at the building, owned by New Bedford Waste Services LLC, a sister company of ABC Disposal Inc.
“It was really very impressive looking, but actually all it was was a good ol' trash burning,” said Rochester Fire Chief Scott Weigel.
He said the garbage, recycling and building materials in the building were partitioned off, and crews worked to remove the smoldering trash before it could spread to other areas of the facility.
“The biggest thing is we wanted to control the growth of the fire,” said Weigel. “It was a long, lengthy deal.”
Firefighters moved the trash outside of the building where they worked to extinguish it.
That was a challenge given the low water pressure.
“The water supply hindered us,” said Weigel.
Water tankers were brought in and a water line run from a hydrant on the corner of Highway 28 and 58.
Weigel said no one was injured as crews extinguished the fire, and the Environmental Protection Agency monitored the air quality, which never reached dangerous levels.
Many of the mutual aid crews left by 4:30 a.m. and the last firefighters departed at 7:30 a.m., though there were some smoldering areas that had to be monitored on Saturday.
Although the fire is believed to have started in the trash section of the facility, Weigel said the exact cause will be difficult to determine. No one was working when the fire broke out, and a lot of trash was displaced in the process of extinguishing the blaze.
“My opinion is it’s an accidental type thing,” said Weigel.
Although ABC Disposal filed for bankruptcy last week, Weigel didn’t think that the fire was suspicious.
The state fire marshall’s office will inspect the facility today, and an engineer will inspect the ceiling structure before the building is reopened.
Rochester Fire received mutual aid from Acushnet, Carver, Freetown, Marion, Mattapoisett, Middleboro, Wareham and Lakeville.
