Friends to honor Mattapoisett resident with bench
The Friends of the Mattapoisett Council on Aging received permission on Monday to install a bench at Center School in honor of Nancy Fleming who passed away in 2014.
At Monday night’s Mattapoisett School Committee, Friends President Kay Levine said Fleming was “beloved by many.” Levine said donations from Fleming's friends will pay for the bench.
Fleming’s husband Donald said his wife was active in the Council on Aging, located in the Center School building.
“She was a marvelous lady,” Donald said of his wife. “I could stand here all night and give you testimony on that.”
The proposed inscription on the bench was a few lines from Nancy Fleming’s poetry, but since one word includes the word “God,” Donald said the word could be changed to “it” instead since the bench will be on school property.
He asked that his children be allowed to approve the change before the inscription was made.
The School Committee approved the bench.
“I think that’s a very nice tribute to Mrs. Fleming,” Chair James Higgins said.
