Frozen turkeys: 5K runners fight the chill

Nov 25, 2013

Despite the cold, it was a great day for a 5K. On Sunday, Nov. 24, 300 runners bundled up and braved below breezing temperatures to run Marion’s Third Annual Turkey Trot 5K. The race began at 10:15 a.m., with the starting and finish line on Front Street at Tabor Academy. Guard Oil, which sponsored this 5K in the past, was again the primary sponsor, guaranteeing 100 percent of the proceeds to benefit the Marion's Recreation Department. Other sponsors are listed on 5kturkeytrot.com.

Turkey trotter Becky Tougas, of Marion, said, “I do it every year. It’s a fun, healthy way to kick off the holiday season.”

Experienced and first time trotters arrived prepared in warm clothing, Turkey Trot 2013 T- shirts, and turkey hats to participate.

“It was cold but so much fun!” said Katie Bliss. “Such a beautiful route especially along the water, and so many people there on the side of the road cheering everyone on. It was such a great time.”

Donna Hemphill, administrative assistant of Marion Recreation Department said, “We’re very excited with the turn out given the cold weather. It’s a beautiful course and we appreciate the support of the community.”

Race manager Jeff DeMoura agreed.

“And it all goes to a good cause,” he said.

There were three winning places for every age division, with results posted on www.racewire.com.

Matt Sylvain, 39, of Dartmouth, was the first to cross the finish line, achieving first place overall. His running time was 18 minutes and 33 seconds.

“It was a great crispy Thanksgiving run,” said Sylvain. “It is cold, but this is New England and that’s part of the risk. It was an awesome run and a lot of fun.”

Second to cross the finish was 20-year-old Nathen Brito, of New Bedford, with a time of 19 minutes and 6 seconds. Third to finish was Kinder Woodcock, 48, of South Dartmouth with a time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds. Both Sylvain and Brito will soon have their names displayed on the Annual Marion Recreational 5K Turkey Trot Trophy, also known as “The Gobbler.”

Participants and race planners alike were pleased with the 5K’s success.

“It’s always a great race and runners always have a good time here,” said Marion Recreation Director Jody Dickerson.
