WITH GALLERY: Sippican School students unveil works in Art Center exhibit

Mar 5, 2013

The Sippican School art students are pretty good with paintbrushes, construction paper, some salt, and even lemon juice.

The resulting 80 pieces of artwork using those elements include watercolor paintings, self-portraits, landscapes, and poetry. All of which will be on exhibit at the Marion Art Center for a six-week run in the Cecil Clark Davis Gallery.

The third annual show was the brainchild of Sippican School art teacher Erin Kirk and Art Center Director Deborah Bokelkamp. The two came up with the idea for having the elementary school students exhibit their work alongside the work of professional artists in a dual show.

This year, the students will feature their work with those of artists Joan Dromey and Cecilia Murray.

“It’s especially great for the parents,” Kirk said. “I typically save the students’ artwork until the end of the year. It’s a nice chance for the parents to see what’s going in the classroom.”

The title of this year’s show is “Color and Creativity.” The featured pieces were chosen based on which works showed the most effort by the young artists, Kirk said. There is no overarching theme, which Kirk said gives the show a lot of variety.

There will be an opening reception for the students’ exhibit on Friday, March 8, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Marion Art Center.
