Gateway All Star Teams advance in baseball tournaments
Gateway All Star Teams have been dominating the Summer Babe Ruth Tournaments so far this season.
The 13-year-olds team for the very first time advanced to the district championships last week, but fell short 2-0 against rival Plymouth. This past weekend, the team swept the field in the Bourne Battle at the Bridge Tournament defeating Lower Cape Babe Ruth in the finals 9-6. Syler King of Wareham pitched an outstanding game against Silver Lake to clinch a spot in the finals. Eric Zine of Wareham set the tone for the championship series, and great defense from Adam Mendes of Old Rochester, Drew Brightman of Wareham, catching from AJ Lecuyer and solid plays by Luke Hanson, Chris Labelle and Nick Figiloli also helped.
Gateway’s 14-year-olds team is undefeated 2-0 in tournament play. The team is the newly crowned Babe Ruth National District Champions after defeating Maplewood in the finals, knocking Plymouth out of the tournament for the first time in 10 years. This past week, the team won the South Eastern Regional Tournament. The team is a mix of talented players from Carver, Old Rochester, New Bedford and Wareham.
The Gateway 15-year-olds team begin their tournament campaign this weekend. Gateway Babe Ruth will hold evaluations for 12-year-olds on Aug. 30 at Decas field in Wareham. For more information, visit www.leaguelineup.com.
