George C. Decas collection selling at Marion Antique Auctions
On November 26, the Marion Antique Auctions will conduct a sale featuring an accumulation assembled over a forty year period by George Decas.
George was a prominent local attorney who developed a strong interest in the history of southeastern Massachusetts. He not only purchased significant historic properties such as the Alden Besse House, a Greek revival mansion in Wareham overlooking the Narrows; the Peter Peirce House, a Federal Masterpiece in Middleboro; but he furnished them with period furniture, paintings and accessories. Great care and research was taken to fill these homes with objects related to southeastern Massachusetts.
Extensive research was conducted by Decas on most of the objects in his collections.
George Decas was a regular visitor to antique shows and auctions and was an active and enthusiastic buyer for many years. He developed many long term friendships with members of the antique trade.
Many of the pieces include paintings, coin collections, furniture and more.
One of the most important pieces of ephemera in the sale, which comes from a Mattapoisett family, is the whaling journal for the Charles W. Morgan. The Morgan was one of New Bedford’s most famous whale ships and still exists today as part of the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum. This journal was kept by N. A. Martin and covers several partial voyages from 1881-1886, 1886-1887 and 1889-1890. No other written record of the 1889-1890 voyage exists. The journal is quite exciting and has many whale stamps.
The Decas Collection is one of the most important collections of Southeastern Massachusetts material to ever enter the marketplace. For information on the sale, call or email Frank at 508-748-3606, frank@marionantiques.com.
