Girls track wins SCC title, looks forward to states
The Old Rochester Regional girls high school track team captured its seventh consecutive South Coast Conference title after its win over Bourne – days after winning at the SCC Championship meet.
The team went an undefeated 8-0 in the regular season this year to clinch the conference title, but that has become an annual occurrence – it has been years since the program has lost a regular season meet.
“This is the seventh [undefeated] season,” head coach Cindy Tilden said.
The team’s final regular season meet was a make-up date after the original meet was postponed, so before officially clinching the regular season title the team had already won big at the SCC championship meet.
All the athletes in the SCC who qualify go to the post-season meet, and ORR managed to come out on top there as well. Now the students who qualify, Zoe Smith and Mikayla Chandler from the girls team and Danny Renwick and Josh Winsper from the boys team, will compete in the all-state tournament.
Smith will compete in the 100-meter hurdle and high jump events, Chandler will compete in the shot put event, Renwick will compete in the 110-meter hurdle, 400-meter hurdle and high jump events, and Winsper will compete in the shot put event.
Tilden said the trick to keep the program dominating year after year is simple – keep the drive alive.
“We don’t let them get complacent,” she said. “We let them know that each team coming up on the schedule is still going to be a battle.”
