Gladiator hockey continues strong start to season

The Gateway Gladiator youth hockey program continued its season over the weekend, with the Squirts, Bantams and Midgets winning all four of the games they plated.

The Squirts defeated the Whitman Hanson Kingston Hawks 5-3 on Sunday. The team was led by strong play from goaltender Ryan Killion, as well as the offensive efforts of Ben Hebbel, who scored a goal and two assists. Braydon Hathon, Liz Kilpatrick, Braydon Cannon and Tommy Clavell also each scored a goal, and Kevin Place had an assist.

The Bantam team had its first two games of the season over the weekend, facing Weymouth on Saturday and the Canal Sharks on Sunday. The Gladiators beat Weymouth 7-3, scoring their first goal less than a minute into the game. Weymouth tied it, but the Gladiators quickly regained a lead that they would not relinquish. Quirino doCanto and Tyler Lovendale both scored twice, with doCanto also assisting both of Lovendale’s goals. Other goal scorers were Jack Martins, Matt Cadieux and Robert Maloney. Goaltender Alex DeMarco made 20 saves.

On Sunday, the Gladiators scored another seven goals in their game against the Canal Sharks, for a score of 7-2. Martins scored twice, doCanto scored another three goals and Lovendale scored twice again. Christian Araujo, Mello, Cadieux, Will Goldman and Bailey Tieu also got on the scoresheet with assists.

The Midget team also had its season opener over the weekend, defeating the South Coast Panthers 5-2. Alex Hathaway and doCanto both scored twice and Zach Lovendale added a fifth goal.
