Grassi Bog project delayed

Nov 2, 2016

The Grassi Bog project has been temporarily put on hold, as the town does not have enough money to pay for the lowest bid. After receiving a Buzzards Bay Municipal mini-grant for $10,924 over the summer, the town had a little over $43,000 to work with.

However, when the plans to solve the flooding problems of the bog went out to bid, the lowest bid came in at over $63,000. Because of this, the town had to reject all bids and go back to secure more funding.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson is said he is “comfortable” with the belief that the town will get the money, but noted that because of the delay, the town will miss construction season.

“We’re looking at the spring [for construction] right now,” he said.

Dawson also added that the discrepancy in cost seems to come from the town’s engineer not taking prevailing wages into account when coming up with a cost estimate.

“That appears to be the fundamental difference in money,” he said.

The town continues to move forward with the acquisition of the VFW building. The title search has been done, and the town is currently working on getting the hazardous materials assessment done. Dawson said he is not anticipating there being any problems, and after that Selectmen will be able to sign the documentation to take ownership. Town Counsel is currently working on developing a deed to the property.
