H-12 championship set for this weekend in Marion
The Beverly Yacht Club will host the 2015 H Class Championship this weekend as 32 Herreshoff 12 1/2 sailboats are registered to compete in the annual race.
The junior championship races are July 31, and the senior championship heats will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
H-12’s have a long history in Sippican Harbor. Designed in 1914 by Nathanael Herreshoff, the boats have been raced by Beverly Yacht Club members every summer starting in 1915. The Herreshoff family has a storied sailing history. From 1893 to 1920, Herreshoff built every America’s Cup champion yacht.
The H Class Association has conducted the H-12 championships since 1972. Each year, a different yacht club hosts the competition, which is a series of five races, weather permitting.
Awards will be handed out after the final race on Aug. 2 at the Beverly Yacht Club.
