Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on Marion build

Jun 7, 2015

Habitat for Humanity officials broke ground on their first project in Marion on Saturday morning. The ceremony marked the end of a four year long process that was hampered by several delays related to legal and permitting problems.

Officials said it was worth the wait.

“The phrase it takes a village has never been more appropriate than on this day, and on this spot,” said Robin Ragle-Davis. She is president of the Buzzards Bay Habitat for Humanity, a chapter of the global nonprofit organization that provides affordable homes for low-income families.

Past presidents of the local Habitat chapter, board members, well wishers and State Rep. William Straus (D-Mattapoisett) gathered at 185 Wareham Road (Route 6) -the home’s future site - for a groundbreaking ceremony.

Pontiac Tree of Wareham volunteered to clear trees from the site as did Massachusetts Maritime Academy students. G Lopes construction demolished a house at the site in 2012.

Ragle-Davis thanked Marion town officials for “their unflagging support, which joyfully led us here.”

Straus was invited to the ceremony for his assistance with the project.

“I have been asked to help with permitting issues at the state level which at times seemed to confound the project,” Straus said, adding Habitat is a worthwhile organization.

“Habitat is well known around the country for providing shelter to families who need it,” Straus said.

This is Habitat’s first project in Marion and ninth on the South Coast.

Build Committee Chair Jack Beck said the home’s foundation should be finished soon after excavation work is completed. Construction should begin in early July and hopefully will be finished 10 weeks later.

Beck said volunteers are welcome and needed.

“We’re gearing up. If you know of anybody who is a contractor with a good heart tell them to come see us,” said Beck.
