Harbormasters weigh in as Henri becomes hurricane, shifts west

Henri has been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, but a westward shift took southern Plymouth County out of hurricane warning, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Still, the area is under warning for tropical storm force winds and storm surge, and boaters have been eagerly removing their vessels from Marion and Mattapoisett’s waters.

“We’ve been steady,” Mattapoisett Harbormaster Jamie McIntosh said. “It died off right around 7:30-8 last night and it picked up around 6:30 a.m.”

Since the storm has been projected to make landfall further to the west, though, McIntosh said some have decided to leave their boats in the water.

“It’s pushed off to the west considerably so a lot of people have tailored back,” he said.

But, Assistant Harbormaster PJ Beaudoin said, Mattapoisett tends to receive harsher winds than are predicted in weather forecasts.

“If they say 40, expect 60,” he said.

McIntosh added that storms coming from the southeast are particularly intense for the harbor.

“Historically we’ve never done well with any type of storm from the southeast,” he said.

In Marion, Harbormaster Isaac Perry said he was pleased with the community response to an order to get all vessels off of the Island Wharf and Old Landing docks.

“I’ve only got two left on the dock, which is huge.”

Perry said the town has largely removed all floating docks and swim floats from the water. But he’s waiting for the storm to get closer to see if everything will have to come ashore.

“If we make the decision to haul the rest of these it’s only going to be four or five hours,” he said. “But a long day yesterday, that’s for sure.”

Perry said that in Marion, the main concern will be storm surge, not high winds.

“Things are looking a lot better than yesterday, that’s for sure,” he said.

And with most boats removed from the docks, things are looking even better.

“It was really a great community effort that was able to make our workload a lot easier,” Perry said.
