Hazardous waste day announced for Rochester, Mattapoisett

A household hazardous waste collection day for Rochester and Mattapoisett residents will take place on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Rochester Highway Department at 200 Ryder Road.

The drive is only residential and does not include commercial, school or industrial waste. Proof of residency is required, and containers with paint, pesticides, and household cleaners should be labeled, packaged separately, and sealed tightly. Leave materials in their containers with the original labels. 

The drive will accept a maximum of 45 pounds of waste per vehicle. 

Acceptable items include paints, pesticides, stains, thinners, strippers, solvents, varnishes, adhesives, glues, resins, waste fuels such as kerosene and gasoline, used motor oil, engine degreaser, brake fluid, transmission fluid, poisons, insecticides, weed killers, wood preservatives, hobby and art supplies, photo chemicals, chemistry sets, cleaners, spot removers, aerosol cans, and swimming pool chemicals.

Unacceptable items include asbestos, smoke detectors, compressed gas cylinders, fireworks or explosives, prescription medications or syringes, infectious or biological waste, fire extinguishers, latex paint (which painters can dispose of by removing the top, letting it dry and throwing it in the trash), tires, PCBs, radioactive waste and ammunition.
