High school singer attracts attention on stage, court
If voices could be measured in height, Sara Achorn’s would, no doubt, tower over her. The 4-foot, 10-inch tall 16-year-old has a powerful, slightly raspy voice that is getting her some attention.
“It’s loud,” Achorn said. “Even my whisper is loud.”
In April, Achorn, a sophomore at Old Rochester Regional and Rochester resident, took home the Audience Vote Award in the Young Performers Club’s Grand Finale Showcase held at the Boston Hard Rock Café. Although she didn’t take home the top award, having the support of the crowd was a boost of confidence for the young artist.
“I got a lot of exposure. That’s what it’s all about – connections and exposure,” said Achorn.
Singing has been part of Achorn’s life since she was young. Her first grade teacher suggested she take voice lessons, and she was clearly onto something. Achorn's parents, Jen and Carl, gave her the room to try out different interests – softball, violin and dancing, but it was singing that stuck.
“Music is just what I do, like a special connection,” she said.
Achorn participated in events such as New Bedford’s Got Talent when she was younger, but she stepped back from competitions for a while, instead practicing her craft at home and on the stage as a member of the Old Rochester Regional Drama Club.
The group has been Achorn’s favorite part of high school.
“I finally found my niche,” she said. “You get to pretend to be someone you’re not for a few hours.”
As a freshman, Achorn got the rare opportunity to play a lead part as the villain in “Seussical.” She also made a name for herself at ORR this basketball season when she performed the National Anthem during the South Coast Conference games and, notably, the state semifinals at TD Garden.
“So many big people have performed at TD Garden. It almost felt like when I walked into the middle of the court that every person who had ever been there, their energy just went into my body,” said Achorn. “That’s definitely one of the things I’ll remember for a long time.”
Achorn said she loves performing rock and musical theater and has been inspired by both Idina Menzel in Broadway’s “Wicked” and the music of Nirvana, Pat Benetar and Pink Floyd.
“I’m all over the place,” said Achorn.
She still has a ways to go before graduation, but Achorn already plans to double major in musical theater and music education.
Until then she is taking vocal and songwriting lessons, practicing her ukulele and guitar skills, and looking for other musicians to form a band. This summer she will sing the National Anthem at a Wareham Gatemen game and hopes to book some other performances.
But the young actress and singer isn't in a hurry to get her whole career figured out.
“I’m kind of just taking it day by day. It’s easier that way. I don’t stress about it.”
