Hometown boy to speak at Marion's Veteran's Day event
Marion native and retired Navy Captain Robert Ellis will be the guest speaker during Veteran’s Day ceremonies Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
He is a recipient of the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for valor in Vietnam. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Claude B. Ellis of Converse Road. Claude served as a Selectman for many years.
Captain Ellis is a graduate of Sippican School and Tabor Academy and now resides in Stonington, Connecticut with his wife Judy.
Ellis served significant tours of duty on four ships and had shore tours in Maryland, Iceland, Rhode Island and Boston.
From 1980 to 1985 he was the commanding officer of the Personnel Support Activity Network in New England, New York and Newfoundland.
Ellis was also the commanding officer of the Navy’s largest Personnel Support Activity Network in Norfolk, Virginia from 1987 to 1991. In that capacity, he was responsible for the Navy’s pay, personnel and passenger transportation in the Atlantic Fleet.
He was also director of the operations and commanding officer of enlisted personnel at the Naval Education and Training Center in Newport, Rhode Island prior to his retirement in 1992 after 38 years of active duty.
He was known as the “sailor’s captain” having advanced from seaman to captain through his long career.
