'Hunger Banquet' to raise awareness for poverty

Feb 4, 2014

Old Rochester Regional Junior High School students will host a "Hunger Banquet" to benefit Oxfam America. The banquet takes place Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.

Dinner is at 6:30 pm. The banquet will raise money to feed the hungry. Tickets are available at the door or the main office of the school. Tickets cost $5 for adults and students.

The banquet is an opportunity to experience poverty and hunger by social class. Meal portions vary based upon your assigned class. Guests draw tickets at random that assign them to a high, middle or low income tier. Each income level receives a corresponding meal that is either filling and nutritious or sparse and simple. Diners are then invited to share thoughts on how to take action.

Guest speaker Annette Brickley, the Education Manager of the Ocean Explorium in New Bedford, will discuss environmental issues affecting hunger and poverty.
