Ice cream social a sweet sendoff for retiring principal Bowman

May 20, 2022

MATTAPOISETT — The sun found its way through the rain clouds to shine brightly on Principal Rose Bowman's retirement celebration Tuesday, May 17 at Center School.

The sweet event featured ice cream, artwork and fun family outdoor activities.

Ice cream was provided by an anonymous donor and scooped by parent volunteers from the Mattapoisett PTA.

The Mattapoisett PTA also supplied sidewalk chalk, hula hoops and beach balls, which were then donated to Center School to be used at recess.

Decorative pennants were created by Center School students in their classes. Art Teacher Greta Andersen asked each student to create a design with the theme "Enjoying Ice Cream."  Anderson then laminated each pennant and put them together on strings to be displayed surrounding the playground.

Music and disc jockey services were provided by Tom Cooney, who is a part-time disc jockey when he is not working his full-time job as teacher at Old Rochester Regional Junior High School.

Bowman was first principal at Old Hammondtown School in 1998 before taking responsibility for Center School in 2008 and combining the roles as principal for both schools in 2014. She has been part of the Mattapoisett school system for 35 years.

On July 1, each school will have its own principal, with Kevin Tavares serving as Old Hammondtown School and a principal to be named for Center School. The shared assistant principal position Tavares holds now will be eliminated.
