Kayaker rescued from Mattapoisett Harbor

Commercial fisherman Chris Parker was in the right place at the right time on Sunday when he fished a Sharon man out of the chilly harbor.

According to Harbormaster Jill Simmons, the man, who was named Aiming Xu, had apparently fallen out of his kayak, which had been rigged with crutches and a two by four to support a motor.

Xu was wearing waders and Simmons said, “the water weight made it impossible to get back on the kayak.”

Fortunately, Parker, one of the few people on the water that day, came upon the man and pulled him out of the harbor.

“His body temperature was down, but not severely,” said the harbormaster.

The man had a safety device on him to alert authorities of trouble; however, Simmons said it can take 90 minutes for the alert to go out and for help to arrive. She said Parker and Xu were coming around the corner, kayak in tow, by the time her office was aware of Xu’s predicament.

An ambulance treated Xu on the scene. He later returned to collect his kayak, which Simmons said was not properly licensed for the rigging that was added to it.

“I told him not to come back to our town again until it’s registered,” she said.

Since water temperatures are only going to continue to fall, this incident is a cautionary warning for those going out into sparsely populated waters alone.

“Be absolutely dressed for it and dressed for some immersion,” said Simmons. “If you’re not ready to be in the water, then you shouldn’t be on the water.”
