Kindergarten funding questioned
School may be out, but Selectmen and Finance Committee members want clarification on how full-day kindergarten will be funded.
Town Administrator Richard LaCamera said he would attempt to schedule a meeting with Rochester Memorial School Committee members and school district officials for the Selectmen’s July 15 meeting.
On June 6, the school committee voted unanimously to pay for the yearly tuition of students attending full-day classes. Parents had paid $2,400 per student. The change will cost $46,592, to be added to the district’s general budget. Selectmen were caught off-guard by the decision. On June 17, Selectman Richard Nunes criticized the committee for acting without consulting the board. Superintendent Doug White has said he is confident the district will be able to afford the added cost.
