Land conservation project moves forward in Mattapoisett
A 27-acre parcel of the 400-acre Nasketucket Bay Land Conservation Project should be wrapped up by the end of the month, according to Allen Decker of the Buzzards Bay Coalition.
Mattapoisett has a total of 250 acres in the project, spearheaded by the coalition in an effort to preserve the land and protect the Buzzards Bay watershed. The remainder of the project is in Fairhaven.
In addition to grants, money approved at the 2013 Fall Town Meeting and 2014 Annual Town Meeting will go towards the purchase of land.
The 27-acre property, which has frontage on Brandt Island Road, has a closing date for June 25 said Decker. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation will hold a conservation restriction on the land that prevents development on the site and allows the public to access the land.
The Conservation Commission already approved the conservation restriction and Decker got unanimous approval from Selectmen on Tuesday night.
He said more parcels for the project would be purchased throughout the summer, and said eventually the land will connect to other nature and recreation areas, including the adjacent Nasketucket State Reservation and the bike path.
“A piece of the larger project is to create a trail connection that connects the state reservation with the bike path,” said Decker.
