MATTAPOISETT — Learn about the healthcare system in the United States of America with a talk at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library.

On Tuesday, May 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Dr. Edward Hoffer will discuss “America's failing healthcare system: how we got here and where do we go?”

Hoffer will cover why the United States “spends vastly more on healthcare than other developed countries and yet has mediocre health outcomes; where the money goes and what people can do to protect themselves,” according to a Mattapoisett Library press release.

“This critical topic is relevant to each and every one of us as we learn to navigate the healthcare system,” the press release said.

The program is free and open to the public.

Hoffer was an undergraduate at MIT and M.D. at Harvard. He did a residency and cardiology fellowship at Mass General Hospital and was in private practice for 40 years, combined with research on medical informatics at MGH.

Hoffer works half-time at the MGH Lab of Computer Science on AI, trying to help doctors make more accurate diagnoses. He is also the author of “Prescription for Bankruptcy.”
