MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Board of Health is offering a presentation on a radioactive gas that can pose health risks and may be inside certain homes.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas, and federal and state guidelines recommend testing homes for the presence of it. It can be inside or old or new buildings, with or without basements. Radon is found in houses built on ledges and houses built on the sands of Cape Cod, according to the Mattapoisett Health Department.

A radioactive gas, radon seeps from the ground into homes undetected, and indoor exposure at elevated levels over time poses significant health risks, including lung cancer, according to the Mattapoisett Health Department.

A representative from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Radon Unit will share a presentation Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library.

A question and answer session will follow the presentation, which will include discussion on how to detect, monitor and if necessary, mitigate the presence of this radioactive gas in a home. All are welcome to attend.
