Learn to turn damaged textiles into art with Mattapoisett Library mending class
Event Date:
MATTAPOISETT — Learn how to use embroidery, patching and darning techniques to turn damaged clothes and textiles into unique works of art with a visible mending workshop Saturday. Jan 18 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library.
Catherine Karp will teach techniques to add personal touches that prolong the life of clothing and other textiles. Participants will learn about materials and methods for mending that will repair and give a creative look to damaged or well-worn items.
Patching with running or cleanly whip-stitched edges will be demonstrated. Reinforcing from above and below will also be taught. Many options for thread, stitching and decorative finishing will be covered as time allows.
Participants should bring a few items. All materials will be supplied, but attendees can bring scissors, needles, threads and fabric scraps. Participants can also bring their own textiles and mend them on the spot and may want to bring snacks or a small bag lunch for the three-hour workshop.
The workshop is free and recommended for teens through seniors. Space is limited. Register at mattapoisettlibrary.org.
