Library board moves forward with renovation plans
The Elizabeth Taber Library could be getting a facelift this summer.
After presenting the possibility of renovating the front of the library last August due to accessibility concerns, the Library Board of Trustees will be moving forward with the project thanks to donor, and former library director, Peggy Repass.
At Tuesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting, Bob Raymond told the selectmen that the plan had now turned into something a little bigger.
“It grew into a much larger project that involves a ramp and gardens,” he said. “The donor family has been wonderfully supportive of this project.”
The board has been able to get a schematic plan and cost estimate done and is read to move forward with the selectmen’s blessing.
“We have a letter of intent pledging from the benefactor that they will fund and run the project,” Raymond said. “To get the most bang for the buck they’ll run it as a private project with their own money.”
He added that the family would be coming to town in a couple weeks and are anxious to see something start.
The selectmen and Town Administrator Paul Dawson were enthusiastic that a ceremonious groundbreaking could be done when the family gets into town, but a few things needed to be taken care of first.
Dawson said the philanthropy agreement would have to be signed, and a few things would have to be vetted through the town’s attorney and the family’s attorney before things could start.
Once the attorneys are in touch, the selectmen can call a special meeting to officially accept the donation.
“This concept is a great idea,” Dawson said. “By having the donor control the funds there are a couple things that could save money.”
Dawson said he’d get the town’s attorney working on it as soon as possible, and he would also reach out to the facilities manager and all other appropriate parties to make sure all aspects of the project are sorted out quickly.
