Local musician looks to inspire others with first single
ROCHESTER— Before musician Ana Poulin began studying music technology at Northeastern University, she started writing songs and playing music in her hometown of Rochester.
“[Rochester] fosters this environment of ‘you can do anything,’ because you're always supported by community members,” said Poulin, who describes herself as an alternative singer songwriter.
She plans to release her debut single “Martinsville” on March 3.
While growing up in Rochester, Poulin found a group of music loving friends whose support fostered her growth as a musician.
Whether it was sharing new music or going to concerts, Poulin and her friends were united by their passion for music.
“Just something as small as sharing that interest was super impactful,” she said.
She began playing guitar at 14 years old with Rick Hiller, a guitar teacher in Middleboro.
“I started writing songs as soon as I started playing guitar, that was the main reason why I wanted to learn in the first place,” she said.
Now, Poulin acts as a jack of all trades when it comes to making music. Poulin does everything from writing songs, playing guitar and producing her own music.
“It’s definitely hard work,” she said. “My goal is to eventually do this full time.”
Poulin said that she takes inspiration from folk artists such as Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and John Denver, who she listened to growing up.
“But as I've gotten older, I've gotten really interested in production,” she said. “So I’ve tried to make [my music] more modern.”
Despite her wide range of skills and talents, Poulin said that there are times where she needs assistance.
“I can't necessarily do everything, for example I can’t play drums,” she said.
Poulin said that she gets help from her friends or outsources the work to local Boston musicians to help her complete tracks.
Poulin said that her friend group of local musicians help her practice her craft.
“We get together and write and work on things. But everything that I'm putting out this coming year is all written by myself,” she said.
It took Poulin two months to write and produce her latest single.
“Martinsville” describes realization of being poorly treated and the value of genuine relationships, explained Poulin.
“There are people in your life who truly love you in the correct way,” she said, describing her song.
Poulin said that she hopes her single will inspire others just as her favorite artists have inspired her.
“I hope it'll help some people,” said Poulin.
“Martinsville” will be available on all music streaming platforms on March 3.
