Local officials recount state primary votes, Cipollini takes Democratic Councillor nod in First District

Sep 17, 2012

Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester officials held a recount last week for one race in the 2012 state primary, yielding the same results as the election two weeks ago.

The recount was for the Democratic seat as Councillor for the First District.

Candidates Nicholas Bernier, Oliver P. Cipollini, Jr. and Walter D. Moniz were neck-and-neck for the nod, but Cipollini emerged victorious in the district.

In the three towns, the results were not as close, but saw Moniz as the local victor.

The recount showed the same number of votes for the candidates in Marion and Mattapoisett on Friday.

In Marion, Moniz emerged the victor with 180 votes to Bernier’s 116 and Cipollini’s 87 votes.

In Mattapoisett, Moniz garnered 308 votes to Bernier’s 236 and Cipollini’s 110.

Rochester officials conducted the recount a day earlier on Thursday, which validated the first election’s results with Moniz finishing with 122 votes to Bernier’s 78 and Cipollini’s 54.

While the recount showed no change in the number of votes each candidate received, Rochester Town Clerk Naida Parker said that holding recounts keeps the voting process “honest.”

“There’s the opportunity to review the process,” Parker said. “The process itself can be questioned.”

Oliver P. Cipollini, Jr. will face off with Republican nominee Charles Cipolloni on Election Day, November 6.
