Local residents prepare clothing donations for tornado victims
Local residents filled the Mattapoisett Laundromat on Route 6 on Thursday, April 26 as they folded, cleaned and boxed donated clothes for the tornado victims in Indiana.
Leading the charge of nearly two dozen volunteers was Mattapoisett resident Beth Oleson.
“All these people who are helping out are moms who spend a lot of their day folding laundry, and for them to come here late at night to help, it’s amazing,” Oleson said.
Owners of the laundromat, Fisher and Rocha Inc., gave the volunteers full use of the facilities.
The volunteers also received a helping hand from Mahoney’s Building Supply, whose owners donated bags.
The bags were in high demand on Thursday as the team of volunteers collected over 100 trash bags filled with donated clothing.
Mahoney's Building Supply also paid for a truck to send to the New Bedford Regional Airport, where they will then be sent out west.
Oleson and Marion resident Jan Aarsheim have been fundraising for the tornado victims since March. Last month, Aarsheim, a pilot, flew her Bonanza A36 airplane filled with donations, to Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Still collecting donations, Aarsheim will make a second trip in May.
