Luck o' the Bulldogs
After the Old Rochester/Fairhaven hockey team clinched a spot in the state championship, both Noah Strawn and captain Sam Henrie mentioned the support from the fans.
“You look at the crowd and everyone’s going nuts,” Strawn said. “It’s amazing. That's what every hockey player dreams of.”
The crowd, roughly twice the size of the Lowell crowd, was loud, energetic and, despite the red, white and black jerseys, dressed head-to-toe in green.
At the Division 3 South championship game in Bourne on March 12 the crowd was decked out in red, white and blue.
To coordinate, fans said player Ryan Labonte hosted a Twitter poll a few days beforehand. The poll would last 24 hours, and options included choices like St. Patrick’s Day, USA, a white out, camouflage and Hawaiian themes.
“The players wanted [St. Patrick’s Day] so the green could bring them good luck,” Zoe Davis said.
Old Rochester teacher Kelly Ochoa said it was also a way to include unite the Old Rochester and Fairhaven fans, whose schools normally wear different colors.
“The kids want to be inclusive with Fairhaven because their colors are white and blue,” she said.
So decked out in green, the fans took to their seats and started cheering “Let’s go Bulldogs” at 7:10 p.m. – 20 minutes before the players would even hit the ice.
“We’re freshmen so this is really exciting,” Toni Ciffolillo said. “I definitely have a lot of faith in them.”
For fans of all ages, this Bulldogs’ playoff run has been an exciting, and historic, one.
“It’s crazy, we’ve never gone this far before,” student Zoe Davis said. “They’re breaking records.”
The Bulldogs play in the state championship game on Sunday at TD Garden and if you’re wondering what to wear, Labonte’s Twitter suggests red.
