Marion Art Center hosts Winter Members Show
The Marion Art Center’s annual Winter Members Show opened on Friday night, featuring artwork from tri-town residents and beyond.
“We’re so fortunate to have so many talented artist in our midst,” said MAC Director Kim Teves. “Some are aspiring, some are accomplished and all are welcome.”
Timothy Foley of Wareham joined the Art Center this week and put his first paintings on display. Foley also restores old frames and pairs them with his work.
“In essence, I’m restoring art to paint new art in,” he said.
While Foley favors acrylic paint, Dartmouth resident Heide Hallemeier prefers watercolor.
“I’m just passionate about watercolor,” she said. “I love the fluidity, the unexpectedness.”
Hallemeier and her friend Sarah Brown of Marion will hold a joint exhibition at the center in the summer.
Brown is also a long-time exhibiter at the MAC, often using pastels.
“I painted watercolor for the first half of my painting life,” she said. She later switched to pastels and said, “It’s a compelling medium. It’s expressive.”
Pastels make up a small percentage of the pieces at the winter show, as do collage, something Wareham’s Helen Lozoraitis prefers to work in.
Formerly more focused on creating pieces with fabric, Lozoraitis said paper provides her more freedom with her compositions, which incorporate sewing and her own photographs.
“I just have fun with the images,” she said. “It’s almost little shrines.”
The Winter Members Show will be open until Feb. 9 and on view during regular gallery hours.
