Marion Brownies learn survival skills at Camp Hadley

Oct 26, 2020

MARION — Brownies from Marion Girl Scouts Troop 67047 spent the day at Camp Hadley on Oct. 24 to learn outdoor survival skills and see each other in person (socially distanced of course.)

The Brownies laid out their towels around a fire pit made edible fire with pretzels and potato sticks to represent tinder and kindling.

Then, using metal pie pans, troop members practiced building their own small fires.

The troop got so caught up in chatting and singing and dancing throughout the day that they forgot to learn jackknife skills, so that will have to wait until the troop’s next outing.

The Brownies blew some dandelion seeds around and wished their strongest wish for a double sleepover. The troop had a closing circle at the end of the day down by the waterfront where they reflected on the day and shared the best and worst of everything, which the Girl Scouts call “roses and thorns.”

Almost everybody said seeing everyone and spending time was the best, and having to leave was the worst.
