Marion COA August events

The Marion Council on Aging has the following events in August.

Aug. 1 – The COA will host lunch and musical entertainment in honor of the Marion COA's first year of programming at the Music Hall. Lunch – pulled pork, potato salad, watermelon and corn on the cob by R.W. Catering of Marion – will be served at 11:45 a.m. followed by Steve Caddick and Avalon performing songs from the Tin Pan Alley era at 12:15 p.m. The event takes place at the Marion Music Hall, Front Street with a suggested donation of $3. Reservations for lunch must be made no later than Thursday, July 28 by calling 508-748-3570.

Aug. 8 – If your birthday is in august, celebrate with cake and the COA. The event begins at noon at the Music Hall. There is no charge for this event, but those attending are asked to register in advance by calling the Marion COA office at 508-748-3570.

Aug. 15 – Take a virtual tour of state parks of the southeast at 12:45 p.m. at the Music Hall. Free, all welcome. Amy Wilmot, regional interpretive coordinator with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, will discuss nearby parks such as Nasketucket Bay, Horseneck Beach and Massasoit in this free event. She will also provide information on The Senior MassParks Pass available to Massachusetts residents 62 year of age or older.

Aug. 22 – Spend an afternoon with poet Robert Frost at 12:45 p.m., at the  Music Hall. This is an interactive performance that begins with a short biographical introduction into the poet’s life. The program will explore some of the complicated aspects of Frost's life, including his political leanings. As part of the performance, an open discussion of the following poems will include “A Tuft of Flowers,” “Mending Wall” and “Birches.” This program is supported by a grant from the Marion Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. This is a free event.

Aug. 29 – At 12:45 p.m. at the Music Hall Marion resident Phyllis Washburn, author of “Good Morning Sam,” will discuss her narrative memoir about the development of the in-depth relationship she and her husband Ralph formed with a unique mute swan. This event is free.
