Structure fire caused by cigarette on Point Road, no injuries
MARION — A structure fire occurred the evening of Friday, April 24 at 1018 Point Road.
Fire Chief Brian Jackvony said the fire was caused by improper disposal of a cigarette.
The fire department received a call for a structure fire around 10:30 p.m. and arrived on scene to find the back of the house on Point Road on fire.
The fire spread from the back deck up the back of the house to the attic.
Five people were inside the rental house at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and the tenants received temporary housing from the Red Cross as the house was uninhabitable for the night.
Jackvony advised residents to smoke away from structures and be careful especially since the spring has dried out possible flammable materials.
“We've seen several fires over the years that started with people on their deck drop something down underneath the deck where there is usually an accumulation of leaves and such under the deck, there's a lot of dry combustibles in those areas,” Jackvony said.
He advised residents to put out smoking materials in containers that have sand or water in them, fully extinguishing it.
The Marion, Mattapoisett and Wareham fire departments responded to the incident. The Rochester fire department assisted in covering the town during the response.
