Marion Historical Commission to hire consultant

May 11, 2020

MARION —  The Marion Historical Commission will receive $30,000 in grant money to hire a historic preservation consultant who will add to the Marion inventory of historic and cultural resources.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission will provide $15,000, and the Sippican Historical Society will match that amount. Completing the inventory is the first step in the Commission’s efforts to update and expand it to state standards. The goal is to have a comprehensive, digitized, easily-accessible database for local preservation planning and education.

The goal of the Marion Historical Commission is to identify and protect the town’s historic resources and to coordinate all community-wide historic preservation planning on behalf of the Town. The Commission also serves as a public advocate to advise the Select Board and other local agencies and works to educate the public.

The Marion Historical Commission has also requested 2020 funding through the Community Preservation Act for the next phases of the three to five year inventory process. The Community Preservation Commission has supported the $25,000 application, which now requires Town Meeting approval.
