Marion police show seniors their gratitude with holiday meal

Dec 7, 2019

MARION — The Marion Police Brotherhood members gathered on Dec. 7 to help feed 127 seniors at its annual Senior Citizens Holiday Dinner.

Officers served turkey, squash, potatoes, and rolls from On the Go catering company in Mattapoisett. Dessert included cookies by children at the Loft School.

The event is about ten years old, and Officer Alisha Crosby it is both a way to give back in gratitude for all the donations that the department receives and to be more of a presence in the community.

“It gives us a chance to have a relationship with them. It’s nice that we have such a good relationship with the community,” Crosby said.

Officer Sean Day thanked attendees for coming, and said that the event was “one of our favorites to host.”

He told seniors they would get cards, and could pick out an ornament on the way out.

Day also encouraged seniors to write notes of encouragement to Bags of Hope, which will give them to women in need.

The decorated trees from last weekend’s Festival of Trees were still up around the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center, where the event took place. They offered seniors the chance to admire them.

“They did a beautiful job with trees,” Edna Bento said. She also appreciated the new whimsical art exhibit up on the Community Center’s walls. “It’s nice to see the art,” she added.

“Dinner was delicious, as always,” said Laura Badger to comment on the event.
