Marion to purchase and lease electric cars

Feb 19, 2019

MARION — After mulling whether to buy or lease new electric vehicles, the Board of Selectmen chose both to buy two electicc Nissan Leafs and to lease two hybrid Mitsubishi Outlanders for the next three years.

Bill Saltonstall and the Energy Management Committee researched replacements for the four electric cars that Marion currently leases, and made final recommendations to the board at its Feb. 19 meeting.

Marion began leasing three BMW i3s and one Nissan Leaf using state grants more than two years ago. The vehicles replaced four Crown Victorias from the police department, and saved the town about $35,000 in gas and maintenance costs.

At the fall Special Town Meeting, voters approved a proposal to purchase the cars at the end of their leases, which will end at various times before the 2019 fiscal year.

Saltonstall had previously recommended the board lease all of the vehicles at a Jan. 22 meeting. The selectmen also questioned the vehicles’ range before they needed to recharge.

The new Nissan Leafs have a range that doubles their older counterparts, Saltonstall explained, to address the range problem. One of the cars will be used by the Recreation Department.

The Building Department found their current electric vehicle “tough to use on construction sites when they’re muddy or flooded,” Saltonstall recounted.

The Energy Management Committee’s solution was a Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, which it will lease for three years.

“The development of electric cars was such that in a few years there will be an even better fit,” Saltonstall said.

The Council on Aging also expressed interest in the SUV for its meal-delivery service, and trips to Boston which might involve bringing a senior in a wheelchair.

Saltonstall did not discuss the specifics of the costs for the vehicles, but noted that it should be well within the $55,000 appropriated by Town Meeting. The cars will be available in June.
