Marion Recreation announces start date for Learn to Play Basketball

  • MARION — The Recreation Department has announced that its Learn to Play basketball program will begin On Jan. 11, 2020 and continue on Saturdays through Feb. 15.

  • The program is designed for students in Kindergarten through second grade, and will take place at Sippican School. 

  • Instructors will focus on fundamentals of the game of basketball and basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and of course teamwork. Participants will also have the opportunity to play smaller games with adaptive nets.

    Aaron Strothers will coach the program this year. Strothers was a member of the Cape Verde National Team for a summer. Following that, he played professionally for Escazu Basketball in Costa Rica, where he also became involved in youth clinics in the area. Since his playing days, Strothers has served in a variety of volunteer and coaching rules in the southeastern Massachusetts community.


  • The cost for participants is $75 for six weeks and includes a participant t-shirt. Participants do not need to live in Marion.
