Marion Recreation seeks July 4 fireworks committee members
Raising funds for a July 4 fireworks display takes time and effort, say the Marion Selectmen.
After having to cancel this year’s display due to a lack of money, the Selectmen agreed on Tuesday to create a new committee of volunteers to take over the event.
The committee will be managed by the Recreation Department, which was given the responsibility to oversee the fireworks last April.
While the Selectmen commended the efforts of the previous Fireworks Committee members, Selectmen Chair Stephen Cushing said that raising money for the event has become a year-round commitment.
“I think it’s a job that obviously cannot be handled by just one person,” Cushing said.
Selectman and Recreation Department Director Jody Dickerson agreed.
“We need to start pushing now. This is not something that we can start in April,” Dickerson said.
Dickerson added that residents have already approached him about joining the committee.
Selectman John Henry said he was confident the funds could be raised in time for next July 4.
“It’s my hope that it gets the attention and management it deserves,” Henry said.
