Marion resident Amanda Gricus receives student-athlete honor

Marion resident Amanda Gricus may have already set a weight throw record at Westfield State University, but following her recent graduation, the track and field champ received another unexpected honor.

Gricus was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District women’s track and field/cross country first team, honoring the top student-athletes in the country.

“I was surprised. It’s not something I expected to get on,” she said.

Gricus was nominated to the team by her Westfield State Athletic Director, Richard Lenfest. She is the seventh Westfield State student-athlete to earn Academic All-District honors in the past three years.

In March, Gricus set a weight throw record for the University. She finished second in the 20 lb weight throw of the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championship at Grinnell College in Iowa.

Gricus beat her own personal school record of 58 feet, 8 inches throwing the 20 lb weight an even 61 feet.

Now a graduate, the former ORR High School athlete is also competing in meets held by the Greater Boston Track Club, an organization in Boston for runners looking to compete after college.

In March, Gricus said the Track Club will allow her to continue with her training.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for people to compete with them,” Gricus said. “They do it for fun, and that’s what I want.”
