Marion School Committee candidate Jessica Harris

If elected to the Marion School Committee, Jessica Harris said the position would be right up her alley.

“I see this as my niche,” she said. “This makes sense to be a place for me to serve because I live and breathe education.”

In the past 17 years, Harris has taught everything from kindergarten at The Loft School to high school students. Before that she worked as a fisheries biologist.

In addition to teaching in a school setting, Harris has worked as an educator in environmental programs. She and her husband Alan also started the Marion Natural History summer program years ago.

“I’ve taught every subject there is. My experience really runs the gambit of education,” Harris said.

She currently teaches high school at Global Learning Charter Public School in New Bedford.

Harris and her husband moved to Marion in 1993 and their kids, Ruth, a junior high student, and Sam, a fifth grader, have attended Sippican School.

As both a parent and an educator, Harris said, “I see what goes on from different perspectives. I feel like I can use those perspectives to help bring some seasoned experience to the board.”

Harris said she was concerned with the way the last teacher contract negotiations went and said they had a negative effect on her family. If she wins a seat on the board, Harris wants to help change that process.

“I would like to see those kinds of negotiations go more smoothly,” Harris said. “I don’t see that they have to be so adversarial.”

Additionally, Harris would like to help Sippican School’s educational offerings continue to improve.

“We have a really well educated community, and we have some amazing programs already existing at our schools,” she said. “I would love to see our school built up to be excellent.”
