Marion Scouts conquer Klondike derby
Jan 16, 2014
Marion Boy Scouts recently put their parkas on for the Klondike derby, held at Camp Cachalotin in Myles Standish State Park.
The one-day event pits teams of Scouts from the region against each other in a series of timed activities.
They tested their camping and survival skills in competitions that included chasm crossing, snowshoe racing, travois building, knot tying, first aid, shelter building, rifle shooting, fire building, wood cutting and a sledge race.
Troop 32 sent five Scouts to participate this year. Two were there for the first time. The derby is for Scouts only. Adults were requested not to assist the Scouts in any way.
Scoutmaster Robert Nakashian said the Scouts improved upon their times from last year and enjoyed themselves.
