Marion Selectmen approve deficit spending for snow removal

Feb 20, 2015

Selectmen voted Friday to give the Department of Public Works permission to spend beyond its $50,000 snow removal budget following another round of storms.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said so far this winter approximately $69,000 was spent.

Selectmen voted unanimously in favor of allowing the department to deficit spend, as permitted by state law.

“We’re not doing as bad as I thought,” Selectman Steve Cushing said. “I figured we’d have spent up to $100,000.”

Dawson said figures from last weekend’s storm haven’t yet been tallied and the actual cost is higher than reported.

The town will seek reimbursement from the state for funds spent during the year’s first storm in late January when a state of emergency was declared.

Police Chief Lincoln Miller has applied for $50,000 from the state.

Dawson said that storm is only one the town is eligible to seek relief for as the other storms didn’t reach state established spending thresholds.
