Marion Selectmen to discuss beach sticker funds with Rochester
Summer may be all fun in the sun for local residents, but for officials, funds collected from beach sticker purchases can be a significant inflow of cash for the town.
Marion Selectman Jody Dickerson has suggested revising the town’s deal with Rochester regarding beach stickers.
To date, Rochester has always collected all of the funds from its residents who purchased stickers to use Marion’s Silvershell Beach. Dickerson has suggested that because Marion pays for the printing of all of the stickers, the town should receive some of the profits from stickers sold in Rochester.
“I understand why Rochester is doing it, but I think that some of the money can be contributed to the town of Marion considering that they are using our facilities,” Dickerson said during the Selectmen meeting on Tuesday.
Although Rochester does pay the salary of one of the beach’s lifeguards, Dickerson said the beach is used by both town’s residents and thus, both towns should share all of the profits.
“Our numbers show that it’s almost 50/50 them using the beach,” he said.
Selectmen Chair Stephen Cushing agreed.
“We’ve kicked the can around for a few years but maybe it’s time to have a meeting,” Cushing said.
Town Administrator Paul Dawson agreed to ask the Rochester Selectmen to have a special meeting to continue discussions on the subject.
