Marion Selectmen promote 'team' atmosphere

If "Team Marion” is to succeed, then town officials can’t pick sides, said Selectmen.

On Tuesday, the board expanded upon a request from the Capital Planning Improvement Committee that called for more collaboration between themselves and Selectmen.

Chair Norm Hills had asked to meet with the Finance Committee and Selectmen to ensure there are no “surprises” when capital projects are proposed.

“I’d like to see this taken a step further,” Selectmen Chair Jody Dickerson said, adding the meeting should include all department heads.

“Everyone should be on the same playing field. Instead of being on team ‘this department’ or team ‘that department’ we should all be on Team Marion.”

Selectman Jon Henry expressed some concern for the proposal.

“I don’t want to convey the impression that we’re micro managing the department heads,” Henry said.

Dickerson agreed. “The last thing I want to do is be a micromanager,” he said.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson offered his support.

“There is probably some real value to putting everyone in a room together and discussing where we are, and where we’re going,” he said.

Following Dawson and Selectman Stephen Cushing’s approval, Henry said he would back the idea. Dawson said he would schedule a meeting between the parties for January.

Selectmen also supported Hills’ suggestions to extend the committee’s timeline for projects from five years to 10. The additional time lets the committee better identify capital projects, Hills said.

Formed four years ago, the committee weighs the importance of capital requests from the schools and town departments.
