Marion subcommittee to review school budget
The first draft of Sippican School’s fiscal year 2017 budget is $6.2 million, and members of the Finance Committee have asked for that number to be lowered.
The fiscal year 2017 budget as drafted is a 10.5 percent increase compared to the current budget.
On Wednesday night, Superintendent Doug White told School Committee members that the budget subcommittee and the Finance Committee met.
“We got some feedback from them. They wanted us to reevaluate the numbers and take a look at any areas we could make some adjustments to,” White said.
The town has approximately $486,000 in new revenue to spend between Sippican School, town departments, the regional school district and Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, White said.
Driving the budget increase are special education costs. White said the subcommittee had asked for direction on how to address that fact.
“They made the case that there were substantial increases in the special education budget and asked how that can be managed,” White said.
