Marion Town Administrator announces leave of absence

Feb 3, 2016

Starting on Feb. 11, Town Administrator Paul Dawson will take an extended leave of absence for an undisclosed medical reason.

Dawson, who had been absent for two recent Selectmen meetings, made the announcement Tuesday night.

“I expect to be gone eight to ten weeks to deal with a medical issue that you all know about,” he told Selectmen. “I won’t go into the details here.”

Selectmen appointed Finance Director and Town Accountant Judy Mooney as acting town administrator during Dawson’s absence.

Dawson recommended Mooney, who has handled administrative tasks during past absences. He they meet regularly to discuss town affairs, budget matters and other municipal issues.

“There is a natural exchange between us day in and day out,” Dawson said. “I’m comfortable recommending she be designated by the board to act in my stead…Judy has the experience and the ability to do this.”

Additionally, Dawson said town administrators from Acushnet, Dartmouth, Mattapoisett and other communities have volunteered their services.

“They have offered, to some extent, to make themselves available if something unusual comes up,” Dawson said.

Dawson described the amount of time he’d be gone as “relatively compact” and expressed confidence in Mooney’s abilities during his absence.

“Judy’s got a lot of experience and will handle this well,” he said.

Responding to a question from Selectman Jon Henry, Dawson said that Mooney would have the same powers and privileges as he does.

Board members approved the leave of absence and Mooney’s appointment with minimal discussion.

Selectmen wished Dawson well.

“Good luck,” said Chair Steve Cushing.
